Cargo traffic at Indian ports has grown at a CAGR of 7.05 per cent from 2003-04 to 2017-18. Of this, the major and non-major ports grew at a CAGR of 4.96 per cent and 11.13 per cent, respectively, during the period under consideration.
The shares of commodites handled at major ports have seen significant changes from 1998-99 to 2017-18. The share of POL decreased from 42.68 per cent to 35.87 per cent between 1998-99 and 2017-18 while the share of coal increased from 15.32 per cent to 21.47 per cent and that of containers increased significantly from 9.45 per cent to 19.67 per cent.
