The Ministry of Finance has given in-principle approval for the launch of five new metro rail projects. These will be in the cities of Bhopal and Indore in Madhya Pradesh and Agra, Kanpur and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. Passenger services on the projects in Uttar Pradesh are expected to commence by 2024. In addition, the ministry has given in-principle approval for Phase IV of the Delhi metro system and the Delhi-Meerut regional rapid transit system. The projects will be sent to the Public Investment Board and the Union cabinet for approval.
