DoT exploring whether to allocate spectrum in E and V bands administratively or through auctions

DoT is currently deciding whether to allocate spectrum in the E and V bands administratively or to auction it. In case it decides to go for the former, DoT will approach the attorney general for his opinion, and if advised will also seek clarity from the Supreme Court. Earlier, in 2012, the apex court had mandated that DoT give out spectrum only through auctions. DoT is reportedly more inclined to administratively allocate spectrum in the E and V bands since this is not access spectrum and is not directly used to provide mobile phone signals, but only used at the back end to connect towers.
