Chief Executive Officer and Director, DP World, Nhava Sheva

Captain Ravinder Johal brings to the table over two decades of experience in the areas of leading business integration, container line operations, procurement and process improvement projects for sustainable growth spanning vast geographies, along with cost reduction and cost efficiency. Currently, he is the chief executive officer (CEO) of DP World’s Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal, the country’s first public-private partnership in the port sector, and is director, Nhava Sheva India Gateway Terminal (NSIGT).

As CEO and Director at DP World, Nhava Sheva, Ravinder is responsible for delivering an efficient and professional experience to customers and optimally utilising DP World’s investments in order to drive the growth of the terminal and the company. Ever since taking over this role, he has several achievements to his credit including the first-time implementation of optical character recognition at terminal gates and automating the gates, thus reducing the gate transaction time by almost 70 per cent. He has also been responsible for successfully deploying remote-controlled quay cranes, improving efficiency, and enhancing the safety and health of operators. These initiatives have resulted in the NSIGT boasting of the highest crane productivity in the western region.

Prior to his role at DP World, he was head, operations, subcontinent, American President Lines, where he headed shipping line operations for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Colombo, Afghanistan and the Maldives. Ravinder has also headed operations for west India and north India at Maersk Line.

Ravinder has been continuously working towards improving India’s rank on the ease of doing business index. His efforts have contributed to an eight times increase in direct port delivery volumes as a percentage of local import-laden volumes by road (from 4-5 per cent in December 2016 to close to 40 per cent at present).

He is a qualified master mariner from the UK with over a decade of sailing experience around the globe on various kinds of cargo ships. Ravinder holds a Business and Technical Education Council diploma in nautical science from South Tyneside College, UK, and a diploma in container terminal management from North West Kent College.

Ravinder is an avid reader and enjoys running as well. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family which comprises his wife, daughter and son.
