IR to use GIS portal to manage its assets

Given the spatial coverage of railway operations, IR plans to use a geographic information system (GIS) portal to map all its assets for better monitoring, management and maintenance. Currently, work is in progress for the global positioning system-based mapping of IR’s assets, including land assets, on the GIS platform. This is likely to be completed by December 2018. Further, an MoU has been signed with the Centre for Railway Information Systems for developing the application which will allow IR to view its land plans overlaid on satellite imagery. The satellite imagery is being taken from the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Bhuvan platform.
