The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has revised the National Electricity Plan (NEP) and estimated a thermal power capacity requirement of 6,440 MW during 2017-22. This is in addition to coal-based power projects aggregating 47,855 MW which are presently under construction and are likely to yield benefits during the period 2017-22. In the previous draft version of the NEP released in 2017, the CEA had projected that no additional thermal power capacity would be required during the period.
