Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced trial runs on the 2.5 km long underground section on Corridor 2 of the Chennai metro, Phase I. The section connects Nehru Park and Chennai Central, covering two stations. Phase I spans 29 km and covers 21 stations. An extension of 9 km length from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar is under construction. The total estimated cost for Phase I is Rs 200 billion. Phase II will span 107.5 km and is expected to cost Rs 800 billion.
