The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) plans to open a new sedimentary basin in the Gulf of Kutch off the west coast. ONGC has made a significant natural gas discovery in the Gulf of Kutch, which it plans to bring to production in two-three years. Kutch will be India’s eighth producing sedimentary basin. ONGC had previously opened six of India’s seven producing basins for commercial production. India has 26 sedimentary basins in all, of which only seven have commercial production of oil and gas. The discovery in the Kutch offshore is estimated to hold about 1 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves.
