The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) has recommended clearance for NHPC Limited’s 800 MW Bursar hydroelectric project in Jammu & Kashmir. The EAC had earlier taken a decision to grant clearance only after a site visit by a sub-committee. However, since the site visit is not possible before June 2018 owing to weather conditions in the state, the clearance was granted to avoid delays in the project. The Rs 245.89 billion project, permitted under the Indus Water Treaty, is in line with the central government’s decision to ensure greater exploitation of India’s share of water under the treaty.
