B.B. Chauhan, managing director, Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) brings to the table more than three decades of experience in the generation and transmission segments.
After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, he started his career as a graduate apprentice in the erstwhile Gujarat Electricity Board in 1984, and has since been closely involved in the power sector. Over the years, he has gained in-depth knowledge of the transmission business as well as of the regulatory and commercial aspects of the power sector.
Prior to working at GETCO, he was associated with Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited, where he was a part of the team that commissioned the 1,450 MW Sardar Sarovar hydro project and a 400 kV gas-insulated switchgear substation. In January 2011, he took over as chief engineer in GETCO’s project department. He has since been handling over 100 projects every year while managing an investment of almost Rs 25 billion annually. He took over as managing director in 2017.
Chauhan has been instrumental in commissioning 720 substations and 19,000 ckt. km of transmission lines in the past seven years despite challenges in land acquisition, difficult terrain, litigation issues, etc. Besides, he has spearheaded the adoption of new technologies like GIS, hybrid switchgear, SCADA systems, and optical bays ranging from 66 kV to 400 kV at GETCO. He has also successfully tied up funding from overseas financial institutions like the Asian Development Bank and KfW for various projects.
On GETCO’s achievements, he says, “Some of our key initiatives have been identifying potential load pockets, replacing ageing and obsolete assets, integrating the renewable energy projects coming up at remote locations, deploying state-of-the-art technologies, and undertaking the integration of the asset management process.” Further, he says, “We have planned the capex in such a way that the transmission network can today handle a peak load of 26 GW as against the actual 17 GW.”
Chauhan believes in streamlining processes of project handling and management, including the standardisation of design, flow of work, and monitoring and closing of projects. He has strong organisation-building abilities and continuously strives to spearhead the company on the path of growth and capacity enhancement through workforce management.
