State cabinet approves the Meghalaya Road Maintenance Policy

The Meghalaya cabinet has approved the state road maintenance policy, which will provide a mechanism for effective road maintenance and management. The policy will focus on creating road infrastructure across the state including the remotest villages by utilising funds available under the state plan, besides rural road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The thrust will be on routine as well as periodic maintenance as well as emergency maintenance in the wake of natural calamities. Under the policy, a committee will be formed for the monitoring, evaluation and quality control of road projects. The state government has also directed the state public works department to groom potential contractors, build their capacities and identify new contractors who can provide quality services.
