The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has approved an additional investment of Rs 31.04 billion for drilling wells and creating surface facilities to produce gas from the Tripura gas fields. The company will produce and supply 5.1 million metric standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) of gas to various consumers in the state for a period of 20 years. The operations include the drilling of 153 new wells and the creation/augmentation of surface infrastructure facilities, the laying of 282 km of pipelines and 600 km of well flow lines. ONGC has also prepared a five-year master plan for exploration and production activities planned for both the western and eastern parts of the state. A total of 221 wells have been drilled by ONGC in the state till April 2017 and 116 wells have been found to be gas bearing (a success ratio of 2:1). Presently, around 76 wells are available for production with a gas production potential of 4.3 mmscmd-4.5 mmscmd.
