Porur drinking water scheme inaugurated in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has inaugurated the Porur drinking water scheme in Chennai. It will involve pumping water from the Porur lake using two 50 horsepower pumps. The water will then undergo treatment through a three-stage filtration process. The scheme will provide 4 million litres per day (mld) of water from the Porur lake to areas such as Valasaravakkam, KK Nagar and Alandur. As against its capacity to hold 500 million cubic feet (mcft) of water, the lake currently has a water storage level of 100 mcft. Before inaugurating the scheme, the state Water Resources Department had undertaken rejuvenation works for the lake at a cost of Rs 200 million.
