The Thirumangalam-Nehru Park section of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, Phase I, in Tamil Nadu has been inaugurated and commercial operations have commenced. Work on the 7.4 km long underground stretch was completed in October 2016. Phase I of the Chennai metro project involves the development of a 54.15 km long metro rail network in Chennai at an investment of Rs 183.7 billion. It consists of two corridors – Washermenpet-Chennai airport (Corridor 1) covering a distance of 23.1 km with 11 stations. and Chennai Central-St Thomas Mount (Corridor 2) covering a distance of 22 km with 17 stations.
