Cabinet approves proposal to build 7,000 MW of nuclear reactors

In a bid to increase nuclear power generation, the cabinet has cleared a proposal to build 10 indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors with a capacity of 700 MW each. The move is expected to boost the Make in India initiative and result in orders worth Rs 7,000 billion for domestic equipment manufacturers. In a separate development, the Indian government has signed a general framework agreement along with a credit protocol with its Russian counterpart for setting up units 5 and 6 (1,000 MW capacity each) at the Kudankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu.
