BSNL launches satellite-based voice and messaging services

State-run operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched voice and messaging services over satellite in the country with a view to improve telecom connectivity in remote areas. The satellite and connectivity gateway for the services have been set up by UK-based International Mobile Satellite Organization in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. In the first phase, the service will be limited to government agencies such as defence forces, public sector units and disaster management agencies. However, BSNL plans to launch its satellite phone services for all citizens by 2019. To this end, the operator has applied to the International Maritime Organization for providing the services.
