Power generation recorded a compound annual growth rate of 5.34 per cent to reach 1,154,524 MUs in 2016-17 from 722,626 MUs in 2007-08. Thermal generation accounted for 86 per cent of the total in 2016-17, while hydro accounted for 11 per cent.

The year 2016-17 saw a capacity addition of 25,528.8 MW, lower than the 30,976 MW in 2015-16. In 2016-17, the thermal segment at 11,550.8 MW accounted for the largest capacity addition, followed by non-conventional, hydel and nuclear.
