The MoRTH has completed the construction of 6,604 km of national highways from April 2016 to February 2017. The target of construction of national highways during 2016-17 is 15,000 km. The slow speed of construction is mainly due to delays in land acquisition and utility shifting, the non-availability of soil/aggregates, poor performance of contractors, delays in environmental/forest/wildlife clearances, rail overbridge and underbridge issues with IR, public agitation for additional facilities, arbitration/ contractual disputes with contractors, etc.
