As on January 31, 2017, the Indian shipping industry had a fleet of 1,306 vessels of 11.48 million gross registered tonnage (GRT) and 17.18 million deadweight tonnage (DWT). Of the total vessels, 900 were coastal vessels with a tonnage of 1.52 million GT (1.7 million DWT) and 406 overseas vessels of 9.96 million GRT (15.48 million DWT). During the month of January 2017, two coastal vessels were added to the fleet and one coastal vessel was sold. Also, three overseas vessels were added to the overall fleet during the same period.
