The government laid the foundation stone for the development of the Barak river as National Waterway-16 on January 29, 2017. The project will be implemented in two phases. The broad scope of work for Phase I includes the fairway development of the 70 km Bhanga-Silchar stretch. Phase II includes the fairway development of the Silchar-Lakhimpur stretch.
