TRAI to initiate consultation on green issues in telecom infrastructure

TRAI is planning to bring out a consultation paper that will review issues related to a reduction in the carbon footprint of telecom infrastructure, including mobile towers. The new consultation paper is likely to review the methodology used for the calculation of the carbon footprint. This comes after DoT had asked the regulator to review the targets that had been fixed earlier with respect to the percentage of towers to be powered by hybrid energy in a time-bound manner, and the methodology of calculating the carbon footprint of telecom networks, including base transceiver stations. In 2011, TRAI had given recommendations to the government for a reduction in the carbon footprint by mobile operators.
