The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has awarded the contract for the construction of a multimodal inland water transport terminal at Sahibganj, Jharkhand, to Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The terminal will have a cargo handling capacity of 2.28 mtpa. The project will be executed on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis and is expected to be completed by 2019. The multimodal terminal will have facilities such as a berthing space for two vessels, a stockyard for storage, a belt conveyor system with fixed hoppers, a barge loader, shore protection works, ramps, a parking area and terminal buildings. The terminal will be developed as a part of the capacity augmentation of National Waterway-1 under the Jal Marg Vikas project, which involves the construction of three multimodal terminals with rail and road connectivity at Varanasi, Haldia and Sahibganj.
