Central government plans to develop a 35,000 km highway network

The central government has proposed the development of a 35,000 km highway network across the country for faster freight movement. Global consultancy firm AT Kearney has identified 40 such economic corridors totalling about 35,000 km. The project will entail the development of 21,000 km of economic corridors and 14,000 km of feeder routes. The proposed economic corridors are Mumbai-Cochin-Kanyakumari, Bangalore-Mangalore, Hyderabad-Panaji, Sambalpur-Ranchi, etc. As per initial estimates, the project will entail an investment of about Rs 3 trillion.
