Foundation stone laid for multimodal terminal at Varanasi

The foundation stone for the Varanasi multimodal inland water transport terminal (Phase I) was laid on August 12, 2016. The terminal is being developed by Afcons Infrastructure Limited at an estimated cost of Rs 1.7 billion. The 1.2 mtpa terminal will have berthing space for two vessels simultaneously, a storage area, a transit shed, parking areas and a floating jetty for passenger transportation. The project will have rail and road connectivity with proposed links to the Jeonathpur railway station and National Highway-7 respectively. The project is expected to be completed by August 2018. The terminal is being developed under the Rs 42 billion Jal Marg Vikas project which is being undertaken with financial assistance from the World Bank.
