The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper on the review of network- related quality of service (QoS) standards for cellular services. The paper seeks to review QoS parameters and benchmarks so as to streamline the monitoring and measurement of these parameters as well as the regulatory framework governing them. It also envisages adding parameters relevant to 4G services. Moreover, the paper has sought stakeholder views on appropriate ways to calculate call drop rates and whether financial disincentives should be levied in the case of below-benchmark performance.
TRAI has also issued a consultation paper to identify and address the issues related to the poor uptake of unstructured supplementary service data (USSD)-based mobile banking services in the country. In the paper, TRAI has advocated a comprehensive review of the regulatory framework for deploying USSD communications. Further, the regulator has sought stakeholder views on ways to determine appropriate tariff models to make USSD-based mobile banking more effective.
