MoR commissions “green corridor” on the 114 km Rameswaram-Manamadurai section

The MoR commissioned the first “green corridor” on the 114 km Rameswaram-Manamadurai section of the Southern Railway line in Tamil Nadu on July 24, 2016. In all, 150 coaches in 13 pairs of express and passenger trains running on the section will have bio-toilets and there will be zero discharge of human waste on the tracks in the section. The MoR has taken up the task of providing bio-toilets in the coaches. This was done to supplement the Swachh Bharat Mission. The move will stop the discharge of human waste from the trains to the ground completely and help improve the cleanliness and hygiene levels. Till July 31, 2016, 43,000 bio-toilets had been provided in IR coaches. The ministry is also targeting the conversion of the Okha-Kanalas and Porbandar-Wansjaliya sections to green corridors by September 2016 and October 2016 respectively.
