Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board takes over O&M activities of 14 sewage treatment plants

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) in Telangana has taken over the O&M of 14 sewage treatment plants (STPs), currently under the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (11 STPs) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (three STPs). Recently, a circular was issued by the Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Telangana, directing HMWSSB to take over the O&M of these STPs, which had been lying defunct for the past five-eight years due to paucity of funds and manpower for their maintenance. According to HMWSSB’s estimates, about Rs 15 million will be required per month to meet the expenditure on electricity, salaries and miscellaneous items.
