Supreme Court dismisses petition seeking ban on over-the-top messaging applications

The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition seeking a ban on over-the-top messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Hike and Viber. The court has asked the petitioner to approach the TDSAT for necessary action. The petition sought to ban WhatsApp and other messenger services on the grounds that they violate provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
