ADB signs Rs 13 billion loan agreement for Kolkata water supply project

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation in West Bengal has inked an agreement with ADB for augmentation of the water supply system and modernisation of the drainage system in the city. ADB will release a sum of  Rs 13 billion for the twin purposes in the next three years. Of the total loan amount, Rs 4.5 billion will be spent on strengthening the distribution network of the city’s filtered water supply. Under this scheme, the civic agency will construct water booster pumping stations in Behala, Tollygunge, Jadavpur and EM Bypass as well as 12 overhead water reservoirs in the Behala, Tollygunge and Jadavpur areas. Further, it will set up a water treatment plant of 25 million gallons per day capacity at Garden Reach waterworks. Further, it will lay about 250 km of water pipelines in areas where residents still depend on groundwater.
