Parliamentary Committee on Estimates recommends apex body for Ganga Rejuvenation

The Parliamentary Committee on Estimates has recommended setting up an apex body, headed by the prime minister, for better coordination and implementation of all the Ganga rejuvenation schemes. The committee has suggested that the apex body should also be backed by a legislative framework with statutory powers to take decisions on all aspects of river rejuvenation projects – whether it is land acquisition for sewage treatment plants, maintenance of uninterrupted flow of the river or regulation of water withdrawal for industrial, agricultural and domestic use. Reportedly, the Ganga rejuvenation project is facing delays due to the multiplicity of implementing authorities.
