The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) has deferred the decision on granting environmental clearance to the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) for the construction of the fifth oil berth at Jawahar Dweep in Mumbai Harbour. According to the committee, it is a replacement project in which Berth No. 4 will be discontinued for use and a new berth, designated as Berth No. 5, will be constructed. However, MbPT has proposed neither the decommissioning of Berth No. 4 nor dismantling and demolition of any other structure. The EAC has advised the port trust to apply for a separate environmental clearance if any demolition works in Berth No. 4 are proposed. It has also sought additional information regarding dredging to be carried out, the exact project site, mangroves conservation plan, location of pipelines, revised layout and reclamation plan.
