TRAI recommends PPP model for speedy implementation of BharatNet project

TRAI has recommended the PPP model and a bigger role for the private sector for the speedy implementation of the national broadband project, BharatNet. The suggestion comes after the project has repeatedly failed to meet its delivery timelines over the past three years and suffered huge cost escalations. The regulator has recommended that the concessionaire’s role in implementing BharatNet should include the deployment of optic fibre cable network infrastructure as well as network operations. Further, TRAI has suggested that concessionaires be selected through a reverse bidding process to determine the minimum VGF sought.
