Foundation stone laid for Chennai Storm Water Drainage Project Phase I

The Tamil Nadu government has laid the foundation stone for implementation of the Chennai Storm Water Drainage Project Phase I. The project scope involves construction of stormwater drains and canals in three zones – Zone VII (Ambattur, Padikuppam, Nolumbur), Zone XI (Valasaravakkam, Ramapuram and Porur) and Zone XII (Alandur-Mugalivakkam, Meenambakkam and Manappakkam). In addition, the project involves laying 260 km of drainage lines at an estimated cost of Rs 10.93 billion. The work on the project is divided into 35 packages and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is expected to begin work at Valasaravakkam, Alandur and Ambattur by mid-January 2016. The entire project is expected to be commissioned by 2018.
